9 Best Employee Recognition Software Platforms Compared (2026 Buyer's Guide)
Compare 9 employee recognition software platforms on pricing, features, and fit, like Kaboon, HeyTaco and more. Includes a buyer's checklist and FAQs.
Transparency note: This guide is published by KaBoon, and KaBoon is one of the nine tools below. We've tried to be fair: pricing and features come from each vendor's own public pages, and we say plainly where KaBoon is not the right fit. Prices were checked in October 2026 and change often, so confirm before you buy.
Introduction
Buying recognition software is harder than it looks.
There are dozens of platforms. Most have a similar pitch ("boost engagement, retain talent, celebrate wins"), and many hide their pricing behind a sales call. It's hard to tell a $3-a-seat Slack tool from an enterprise platform with a global rewards marketplace, and harder to know which one your team will actually use.
The stakes are real. In Gallup and Workhuman's 2024 research, just 22% of employees said they get the right amount of recognition for the work they do. The same research found that well-recognized employees were 45% less likely to leave their organization after two years. (Those are survey-based associations, not proof of cause and effect.) Software can help close that gap, but only if people use it.
This guide compares nine platforms: Workhuman, Achievers, Awardco, Motivosity, Nectar, Assembly, Bonusly, HeyTaco, and KaBoon. For each one you'll find who it's for, what it costs (when published), and the trade-offs. At the end there's a buyer's checklist and a simple way to run a pilot.
What Recognition Software Can (and Can't) Do
Software doesn't create a recognition culture. It makes one easier to sustain.
Gallup recommends recognizing every employee at least once every seven days, and that is hard to do from memory. A tool helps by making recognition fast, visible, and trackable.
What software can't do is replace sincerity. Gallup's guidance is that recognition should be genuine, specific, and tied to purpose. A platform full of "great job!" messages is still a platform full of empty messages.
So the right question isn't "which tool has the most features?" It's "which tool will my people actually open?"
How to Evaluate Recognition Software
We used two lenses.
Lens 1: The five pillars of strategic recognition
Gallup and Workhuman describe high-quality recognition with five pillars: fulfilling, authentic, personalized, equitable, and embedded in culture. Translated into software questions:
- Fulfilling: Does it make frequent recognition easy?
- Authentic: Does it encourage specific, sincere messages (for example, by tying to values)?
- Personalized: Can people be recognized in ways they like?
- Equitable: Can you see who's being recognized and who isn't?
- Embedded: Does it live where people already work?
Lens 2: Practical buying criteria
Workhuman published an eight-point evaluation guide (note that it is vendor-authored). Its criteria: user experience, integrations, reporting and analytics, reward options, support and training, scalability, customization, and social engagement features. We've folded these into the comparison below.
Our method
We reviewed each vendor's public pricing and product pages in October 2026. Where a vendor doesn't publish prices, we say "custom quote" rather than guess. We didn't run hands-on trials of every competitor, so our descriptions reflect what the vendors say publicly.

The 9 Platforms
Enterprise Platforms
1. Workhuman
Best for: Large enterprises that want a structured, enterprise-wide recognition program.
Workhuman is one of the best-known names in the category, and it is the company behind the Gallup-Workhuman recognition research cited throughout this guide. Its own buying guide positions it for mid-market and enterprise organizations and describes it as offering recognition tied to values, milestones, and inclusion.
- Pricing: Custom quote.
- Strengths: Research pedigree, enterprise scale, values and milestone recognition.
- Trade-offs: No public pricing, and the size of the platform means a longer rollout. It's likely overkill for a team of 50.
2. Achievers
Best for: Mid-market and enterprise organizations that want a branded, full-featured program.
According to its pricing page, Achievers offers monetary and non-monetary recognition, a global rewards marketplace, years-of-service tracking, nomination-based awards, and integrations including Workday, Microsoft, Slack, and Zoom. It lists a custom-branded platform, analytics dashboards, SSO, and support in many languages.
- Pricing: Custom quote. The page says there is "no annual points commitment required."
- Strengths: Breadth of features and global reach.
- Trade-offs: Quote-only pricing, aimed at larger organizations.
3. Awardco
Best for: Mid-market and enterprise companies that care most about rewards and global fulfillment.
Awardco's site highlights peer-to-peer and manager recognition, automated milestone recognition, award nomination workflows, and what it calls the world's largest reward network, covering 163+ countries. It integrates with Slack and Microsoft Teams.
- Pricing: Not publicly listed, except that small businesses with 100 employees or fewer can get packages starting at $3,000.
- Strengths: Rewards network, approval workflows, external (customer or vendor) recognition.
- Trade-offs: Pricing requires a sales conversation.
Mid-Market Platforms
4. Motivosity
Best for: Mid-sized companies that want recognition, rewards, and engagement in one place.
Motivosity's pricing page describes three solution bundles and a modular model: a platform fee of about $0-$2 per employee per month, plus roughly $1 per additional module, with a $3,000 annual minimum. It lists milestones, peer-to-peer recognition, spot bonuses, nominations, wellness challenges, pulse surveys, a mobile app, and a very large rewards catalog. It integrates with HRIS tools, SSO, Slack, and Teams.
- Pricing: Ranges published, exact quote required. Typical annual ranges listed for 20-250 employees are $3,000-$10,000.
- Strengths: Broad feature set, strong rewards options, global coverage.
- Trade-offs: The $3,000 minimum and a 30-60 day setup make it a bigger commitment than chat-native tools.
5. Nectar
Best for: Teams that want recognition bundled with surveys and internal communications.
Nectar's pricing page shows five bundles combining its Recognize product with Engage (surveys, eNPS) and Comms tools. Recognize includes peer-to-peer recognition, points-based rewards, a global reward catalog, automated milestones, and analytics. It integrates with Slack, Teams, and HR systems such as Workday, ADP, and Okta.
- Pricing: Not displayed; the page directs you to request pricing.
- Strengths: Bundles for teams that want one vendor for several people-ops needs.
- Trade-offs: Quote-based pricing makes comparison harder.
6. Assembly
Best for: Mid-sized teams that want recognition plus people analytics.
Assembly's pricing page lists a paid Empower plan at $3 per user per month, billed yearly, including milestone celebrations, awards and challenges, a global reward catalog, peer-to-peer recognition, points and budget controls, and AI-driven insights. An enterprise plan is custom. The page does not mention a free tier, and it doesn't spell out Slack or Teams support, so check the integrations page.
- Pricing: $3/user/month (billed yearly); enterprise custom.
- Strengths: Published pricing, budget controls, analytics.
- Trade-offs: Annual billing, so less flexible than month-to-month tools.
Chat-Native and Small-Team Platforms
These tools run inside Slack or Teams, which matches the "embedded" pillar: recognition happens where work happens.
7. Bonusly
Best for: Teams that want peer recognition with rewards inside Slack or Teams.
Bonusly's pricing page lists a Free plan for up to 8 users (peer recognition, Slack and Teams integrations, mobile apps), a Team + Bizy plan at $5 per user per month or $50 per user per year (or $3/user/month, $30/year without its Bizy AI add-on), and Organization + Bizy at custom pricing. Higher plans add pulse-check analytics, automated milestone celebrations, and HRIS integrations. Rewards are priced at face value, so a $10 gift card costs you $10.
- Pricing: Free (up to 8 users); $3-$5/user/month; custom for organizations. 30-day trial for paid plans.
- Strengths: A free tier, clear pricing, Slack and Teams, rewards at face value.
- Trade-offs: Several of the extra features (HRIS, analytics) sit on higher tiers. Remember that rewards are a separate cost on top of the subscription.
8. HeyTaco
Best for: Small to mid-sized teams that want a lightweight, playful way to give recognition in chat.
HeyTaco's pricing page lists two plans: Classic at $3 per user per month and Deluxe at $5. Both include peer-to-peer recognition, leaderboards, quests (participation challenges), a custom reward shop, and gamification elements such as levels and avatars. Deluxe adds automated milestone celebrations, instant gift cards across 200+ countries, and advanced analytics. It supports Slack and Teams, has a 30-day free trial with no card, and only charges for users who give or receive their first taco.
- Pricing: $3 or $5 per user per month; custom for 200+.
- Strengths: Simple, fun, and low-cost. Billing is based on active users.
- Trade-offs: The leaderboards are ongoing, which is where the "same people on top" problem can creep in. (See our post on why seasons and resets keep leaderboards fresh.)
9. KaBoon (Our Product)
Best for: Slack-based teams that want recognition to feel like a game, with team competition and seasonal resets.
KaBoon is employee recognition software built for Slack. People recognize each other with an /award command in any channel, and each award adds 💥 Merits to a shared team total. Organizations are split into competing teams (houses, squads, guilds), and recognition is tied to company values.
What makes it different is seasons. When a new season starts, scores reset, so every team gets a fresh shot. Each season can have a new theme, and historical season records are kept. A values heat map and analytics dashboard show which company values are being demonstrated, by member and team. Merits can optionally convert into spendable "boons" (10 merits per boon by default) for rewards you set up yourself, such as lunch with the CEO, PTO, merchandise, team outings, or charity donations.
- Pricing: Spark at €3 per seat per month (base recognition) and Boom at €5 (full feature access). Billing is monthly and pro-rated daily, with no contracts or annual minimums, and you can cancel anytime. A "seat" is an active member, meaning someone who gave or received recognition or signed in to the web app. Prices are in euros, excluding VAT. 30-day free trial on the full Boom plan, no credit card needed. Initial setup takes about 10-15 minutes.
- Strengths: Gamified team competition, seasonal resets that stop leaderboards going stale, values analytics, low cost, no lock-in.
- Trade-offs (be honest with yourself here):
- KaBoon is Slack-only. If your company uses Microsoft Teams, it isn't the right choice.
- Rewards are optional and admin-built, not a global marketplace of gift cards. If you need worldwide reward fulfillment, a platform like Awardco or Achievers fits better.
- It's built around team competition. If your culture would rather avoid anything competitive, a non-gamified tool may suit you better.
How to Choose: Match the Tool to Your Situation
| If this sounds like you... | Look at |
|---|---|
| You have thousands of employees across countries and need enterprise scale | Workhuman, Achievers, Awardco |
| You want rewards and global fulfillment to be the centerpiece | Awardco, Achievers, Motivosity |
| You want recognition, surveys, and comms from one vendor | Nectar, Motivosity |
| You want published pricing and analytics at mid-size | Assembly, Motivosity |
| You live in Slack or Teams and want something quick to roll out | Bonusly, HeyTaco |
| Your team is 8 people or fewer and wants to try free | Bonusly (free plan) |
| You use Slack and want playful team competition with seasons | KaBoon |
| You use Microsoft Teams | Bonusly, HeyTaco, Motivosity, Awardco, Nectar |
What Will It Actually Cost? A Rough Example
Subscription pricing is easy to compare. Total cost is not, so keep three things in mind.
1. Seats may mean different things. KaBoon bills for active seats (people who gave or received recognition or signed in). HeyTaco charges once a user gives or receives their first taco. Other vendors may charge for every employee. Ask how a "seat" is defined.
2. Rewards are a separate budget. Bonusly notes that rewards are priced at face value, meaning the gift cards are on top of the subscription. Decide whether you want points redeemable for real rewards at all. Many teams get plenty of value from public praise alone.
3. Billing terms differ. Some tools bill monthly with no contract; others bill annually or require a minimum spend (Motivosity lists a $3,000 minimum).
Illustration (assuming 100 active users, subscription only):
- A $3-per-user tool costs about $300 per month.
- A $5-per-user tool costs about $500 per month.
- Custom-quote platforms need a quote, so ask for the total cost including onboarding, support, and any reward fees.
This is a simplified comparison. Real costs depend on plan tier, active-user definitions, and rewards.
Buyer's Checklist: 12 Questions to Ask Any Vendor
- Where does recognition happen? In Slack or Teams, a separate portal, or both? (The more it lives where people already work, the more it gets used.)
- How is a "seat" defined and billed?
- What is the contract term and minimum spend?
- What does the free trial include, and does it require a credit card?
- How much do rewards cost, and who pays for fulfillment?
- How does it tie recognition to company values?
- What reporting do I get? Can I see who's being recognized and who isn't? (Remember the equity pillar.)
- What integrations are included, and which cost extra?
- How long does setup take, and how much admin time does it need?
- What support is included?
- Can people recognize each other publicly and privately?
- What happens to my data if I leave?
How to Run a 30-Day Pilot
Don't pick a platform on a demo alone. Pilot two finalists.
Week 1: Set up. Install, connect your workspace, and pick one or two teams. Agree on what you're testing (for example, "Do people recognize each other without being reminded?").
Week 2: Launch with a nudge. Announce it, explain the why, and have leaders go first. Gallup's guidance is that recognition should be specific and sincere, so show an example of a good message.
Week 3: Watch the numbers. Track how many people gave recognition, how many received it, and whether it's concentrated in a few people.
Week 4: Ask people. Run a quick survey: Was it easy? Did it feel genuine? Would you keep using it? Then decide.
What to measure:
- Percent of pilot users who gave at least one recognition
- Percent who received at least one
- Recognitions per person per week (Gallup's benchmark is at least one every seven days)
- Qualitative feedback on whether it felt authentic
Common Mistakes When Buying Recognition Software
Buying for features you won't use. A powerful platform nobody opens is worse than a simple one everyone does.
Ignoring where your people work. If your company lives in Slack, a separate portal faces an uphill battle.
Focusing only on rewards. Points and gift cards can help, but the research says recognition works through being specific, timely, and sincere.
Skipping the rollout. Tools don't launch themselves. Plan an announcement, leader participation, and a reminder rhythm.
Not checking for equity. If the tool only shows who's recognizing most, you'll miss who's being left out.
Locking into a long contract too early. Try before you commit to a year.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is employee recognition software?
It's a tool that helps organizations recognize and reward employees, usually through peer-to-peer praise, manager recognition, milestones, and sometimes points or rewards. Many work inside Slack or Microsoft Teams.
How much does employee recognition software cost?
It varies widely. Chat-based tools publish prices around $3-$5 per user per month. Bonusly has a free plan for up to 8 users. Enterprise platforms such as Workhuman and Achievers use custom quotes. Motivosity lists a $3,000 annual minimum, and Awardco lists small-business packages from $3,000.
What's the best employee recognition software for Slack?
Several tools are built for Slack, including Bonusly, HeyTaco, and KaBoon. The best fit depends on whether you want rewards (Bonusly), a playful taco-style system (HeyTaco), or team competition with seasonal resets (KaBoon).
Which recognition software works with Microsoft Teams?
Bonusly, HeyTaco, Motivosity, Awardco, and Nectar all list Microsoft Teams support. KaBoon is Slack-only.
Is there free employee recognition software?
Bonusly offers a free plan for up to 8 users. Most others offer free trials instead (for example, HeyTaco and KaBoon both offer 30 days without a credit card).
Does employee recognition software actually work?
Recognition itself is linked to better outcomes. Gallup and Workhuman found that well-recognized employees were 45% less likely to leave within two years. Software helps by making recognition frequent and visible, but those results depend on how recognition is done, not just on having a tool.
Do we need a rewards catalog?
Not necessarily. Many teams start with public recognition and add rewards later. If you do want rewards, check how fulfillment and costs work.
How long does it take to roll out recognition software?
It ranges from minutes for chat-native tools (KaBoon lists 10-15 minutes for initial setup) to 30-60 days for fuller platforms (Motivosity lists 30-60 days).
The Bottom Line
The right tool is the one your team actually uses.
If you need enterprise scale and global rewards, look at Workhuman, Achievers, or Awardco. If you want a broader people-ops suite, look at Motivosity or Nectar. If you live in Slack or Teams and want something light, look at Bonusly or HeyTaco.
And if you're a Slack team that wants recognition to feel fun, with team competition, fresh seasons, and values built in, give KaBoon a try.
Whatever you pick, run a pilot, measure real usage, and remember that the software is only a vehicle. The recognition still has to be real.
