How to set up a new season

A season is one time-boxed round of recognition and competition. The guided wizard walks you through it in about 10–15 minutes. Here's each step and what it does.

The seven steps

KaBoon's season wizard breaks setup into small decisions. You can accept the defaults on most of them and refine later.

1

Theme

Choose the look and language for this season: currency, team names, and the vibe on leaderboards and in Slack. Pick a wizarding, galactic, kingdom, or plain-teams feel; everything downstream inherits it.

2

Name & runtime

Give the season a name and set when it runs. Defaults start today and end on December 31 so you can reset standings on a familiar calendar rhythm.

Seasons are time-boxed on purpose, an end date is what keeps competition fresh and gives everyone a fair restart.

3

Slack

Pick the channel where KaBoon posts season updates, awards, and leaderboard activity so recognition stays visible where your team already works.

4

Enrollment

An optional welcome flow that assigns new joiners to a team, with a short ceremony or sorting quiz. Turn it off if you prefer to assign people yourself on the Members step.

Not sure what this is? See the guide: What is an enrollment ceremony?

5

Rewards

Optional Boon Shop prizes for this season. Most teams skip rewards at first, watch typical point totals for a few weeks, then add catalog items from Admin → Rewards with sensible boon prices.

6

Factions

The competing teams for this season: houses, squads, crews, or whatever fits your theme. Every award rolls up to a faction total on the leaderboard. You need at least two.

7

Members

Assign workspace members to factions now, or leave people unassigned if enrollment will sort them automatically when they join.

What happens after you launch

Recognition starts immediately

Once live, anyone can run /award in Slack to recognize a teammate. Praise is public, specific, and tagged to a value.

Standings update live

Every award rolls up to the recipient's faction, so the leaderboard reflects the competition in real time.

Add rewards when you're ready

Turn on the Boon Shop mid-season if you want. Recognition works perfectly well without it until then.

Reset when the season ends

When the end date arrives, start a fresh season. The leaderboard resets so no one is locked out by an early lead.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to set up a season?+

Most teams finish the guided wizard in about 10–15 minutes. You pick a theme, name the season and set its dates, choose a Slack channel, decide on enrollment and rewards, create your factions, and assign members.

Do I have to set an end date?+

Yes. Seasons are time-boxed, which is what keeps competition fresh. Defaults start today and end December 31 so you can reset standings on a familiar calendar rhythm, but you can set any start and end date.

What happens when a season ends?+

The leaderboard resets for the next season, so a slow start never locks in the standings permanently. Recognition history is preserved; the competition simply starts fresh.

Can I change a season after it launches?+

Yes. You can adjust rewards, factions, and members from the Admin area after launch. Most teams start simple and add values, rewards, and enrollment tuning over the first few weeks.
