How points, boons & rewards work
KaBoon's recognition economy has three simple layers: earn points from awards, convert them into spendable boons, and redeem boons for rewards. Rewards are always optional.
The three layers
Points, boons, and rewards build on each other. You can stop at points and still have a full recognition program.
Points: earned from recognition
Every /award grants points to the recipient, tagged to a company value. Points are the score: they roll up to factions and drive the leaderboard. This is the whole system for teams that never turn on rewards.
Boons: points made spendable
Boons are the currency people spend on rewards. You set the conversion rate, how many points equal one boon, so a member's boon balance is simply their points divided by that rate.
Rewards: what boons buy
The Boon Shop is your catalog of prizes, each with a boon price you choose. Members redeem boons for rewards, and redemptions are tracked so fulfillment stays organized.
A quick example
Say you set the rate to 10 points per boon. A teammate racks up 120 points from awards this season, that's 12 boons to spend. If a reward in the Boon Shop costs 8 boons, they can redeem it and keep 4 boons toward the next one. Their 120 points still count in full toward their faction on the leaderboard.
Two kinds of rewards
Individual rewards
Personal prizes a member redeems for themselves, a coffee, a gift card, an afternoon off. Priced in boons and claimed whenever someone has enough.
Team rewards
Collaborative goals a whole faction works toward together, pooling boons for a shared prize. Recognition becomes a team objective, not just a personal perk.
Rewards are optional
Recognition works on its own
Points, values, factions, seasons, and leaderboards deliver a complete recognition program with no rewards attached.
Start simple, add later
Most teams skip the Boon Shop at first, watch typical point totals for a few weeks, then add prizes with sensible boon prices.
You control the economy
Set the points-per-boon rate and each reward's price to keep the shop balanced against how much recognition actually happens.
Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between points and boons?+
Points are what you earn from every award, tagged to a value and rolled up to your faction on the leaderboard. Boons are the spendable currency you convert points into. You set how many points equal one boon, and boons are what people redeem for rewards.
Are rewards required?+
No. Recognition works fully on its own: points, values, factions, seasons, and leaderboards need no rewards. The Boon Shop is optional. Most teams skip it at first, watch typical point totals for a few weeks, then add prizes with sensible boon prices.
What kinds of rewards can we offer?+
Two types. Individual rewards are personal prizes a member redeems for themselves. Team rewards are collaborative goals a faction works toward together. You build the catalog from Admin → Rewards.
How do people redeem rewards?+
Once the Boon Shop is enabled, members spend their boons on catalog items. Each reward has a boon price you set, and redemptions are tracked so fulfillment stays organized.
